Celebrating People of the Web

People of the Web Today Yahoo! News launched People of the Web, a new series that features, quite literally, the people behind the Web.

It's an ambitious project, but we've got the right man for the job. Kevin Sites, fresh off his Hot Zone reporting saga over the past year, is taking on this new multimedia project. Obviously this project is entirely different in it's scope and subject matter. But, it's also the world's most constantly expanding beat. Simply put, he's trying to put a face on the Internet. That's not an easy job.

I'm proud to have been a part of the team that launched this site. It's my second time working with Kevin and his production crew. We've done a couple of new things that we think are pretty cool: 1. We've embedded video on every story page. This isn't rocket science, but it's new for Yahoo! News and we hope to deliver the full story to you, the moment you land on the page. 2. We added a MyBlogLog widget, with the goal of introducing you to other readers and Netizens you might find interesting.

We hope you like the site as much as we do. Enjoy!

Popular on Flickr

John Lennon's car

I'm no pro, and am hardly even an amateur photographer. I try to take some decent photos of nature and scenery, and sometimes even succeed (at least in my mind).  I take a ton of photos of my kid that only my family and I could enjoy.

It's interesting to see which Flickr photos I've posted are the most popular, based on views. I recently bought a nice Canon digital SLR (Rebel XTi). It takes really nice photos. However, four of my top five photos were either taken with a camera phone, or with little to no thought about composition (and using a point-n-shoot digital camera).

The top five:

1. John Lennon's Rolls Royce
2. Pigs sculpture on Portland's 23rd. Ave., taken with a camera phone
3. A camera phone photo of Pearl Jam - you can't even see them
4. My friend Jon and I in Big Sur, poorly lit and our backs to the camera
5. A bad photo taken from the car window, probably while moving slowly, of the marker denoting the US/Canadian border. It's a concrete post for chrissakes.

The only scenic photos that I actually made an effort on which fall into the top 10 are:

6. Big Sur coastline
8. McWay Falls, also in Big Sur - but easily not the best photo I took there.

One of my favorite photos, this picture of a sunset in Kauai, has only been viewed a few times, but at least got a comment/favorite rating by someone.

I don't know what this all means. Perhaps I should sell the new Canon and buy a better camera phone.

Welcome

I've got at least a dozen accounts open with a variety of social networking sites and services. I write a half-assed blog on what's proven to be a relatively fun but very inflexible platform. It's all done the job, but I've grown up and now it's time to move out. I hope to centralize my thoughts and my online life here, at least as much as possible. We'll see what happens. Hope you enjoy.
